Recognizing the important role of teachers in education, the Tan Yan Kee Foundation partnered with another Lucio Tan entity, the Foundation for Upgrading the Standard of Education (FUSE), for the training of teachers all over the country.
FUSE was created on December 1, 1994 upon his return from one of his travels abroad where he observed how much the Philippines lagged behind its neighbors in the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) in terms of education.
With the help of Sorsogon Representative Salvador H. Escudero, who was then the chairman of the House Committee on Education, and Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, former president of the University of the Philippines and former chair of the Senate Committee on Education, Mr. Tan established FUSE to elevate and maintain a high standard of education through improved teacher training, especially in science, mathematics and English.
FUSE, whose operations is headed by Mr. Escudero and a team of outstanding educators, has been conducting teachers training programs in cooperation with various learning institutions.
A major project of FUSE is the Continuing Studies in Education via Television (CONSTEL), a multi-media approach that helps teachers become specialists in their respective areas. The project is in partnership with the People's Television (PTV-4), the Department of Education, the Department of Science and Technology, the University of the Philippines-Institute of Science and Mathematics Educational Development (UP-ISMED) and the Philippine Normal University.
